Harpers Ferry is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful and charming little towns on earth! It is full of character, history, and a lot of adventure! Located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, the town is home to only about 300 permanent residents, but it plays host to thousands more each year as those seeking the splendor the area so abundantly provides, flock to the tiny town.
I HIGHLY recommend spending a day exploring the many wonderful opportunities Harpers Ferry has to offer. Here are a few favorites:
HIKING
Maryland Heights – A trip to Harpers Ferry would not be complete without hiking up to Maryland Heights. This popular and somewhat strenuous trail is THE “must do” hike in the area. The iconic view from the lookout point is SPECTACULAR!!
Stone Fort – If you’re in the mood for a real workout, hike up to the old Stone Fort on top of the mountain. This hike will take a few hours to complete and the climb up is STEEP and strenuous. A nice way to end this hike is to stop off at the Maryland Heights lookout on the way back down.

Loudoun Heights – A much lesser traveled hike to consider is Loudoun Heights. From the Loudoun Heights lookout point, Split Rock, you will find another marvelous view of the town.

Jefferson Rock – If you’ don’t mind steps, but you’re looking for a shorter hike with an interesting destination, head up to Jefferson Rock. This hike takes you along a section of the Appalachian Trail and by the beautiful and historic St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church.
Train Bridge and C&O Canal Towpath – Interested in a relatively flat hiking experience or a great place to ride your bike? Cross over the Potomac River footbridge and take a walk or ride on the C&O Canal towpath.
BIKING
Of course, with the C&O canal towpath just across the Potomac River, Harpers Ferry is a fun place to ride and sight see at the same time. Just cross over the train bridge to access the towpath and enjoy your ride!
HISTORY
Visit John Brown’s Fort and learn about his raid on the armory at Harpers Ferry. Explore the Meriwether Lewis exhibit (of Lewis & Clark fame), or step back in time at the Dry Good Store, White Hall Tavern, the Blacksmith’s Shop, Frankel’s Clothing Store, and the other locations set to the period. Don’t forget to stop in at the bookshop for an interesting book to read or souvenir. For more information, click here.
GHOST TOURS
After dinner, why not partake in a leisurely stroll around town while listening to tales of ghostly encounters, historical events, and spooky legends from the past? Billed as “family and dog friendly”, the tour is a wonderful way to end your day! Ghost Tours of Harpers Ferry was also recently voted the #1 ghost tour in the country by Trip Advisor!!
RESTAURANTS
The Rabbit Hole – 186 High Street
One of our favorites! In fact, Dan and I ate here the day we met! 😀 On a nice day or evening, sit outside on their large deck and enjoy the gorgeous view while you eat under one of their big umbrellas!
ADVENTURES
Several local outfitters offer an array of adventure sports opportunities including tubing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and zip lining. We have personally patronized River Riders on several occasions. They do a nice job and we’ve always had a great time. Others local outfitters include Harpers Ferry Adventure Center and River & Trail Outfitters.
