JFK50 Ultramarathon

The JFK50 Ultramarathon is a 50 mile long endurance race that has been held every year since 1963. The race begins early in the morning in Boonsboro, MD on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Over a thousand participants gather at the starting line near the center of town.

The first few miles is run on Rt. 40, up the big hill to the Old South Mountain Inn. There the course turns onto the Appalachian Trail where it continues for about 14 miles. After making the descent from the Weverton Cliffs area, the race transitions onto the C&O Canal towpath near Harpers Ferry, WV. It then follows the towpath for approximately 27 miles. (That’s longer than a full marathon!) Once runners reach Dam #4 on the towpath, they finish off with about 7 miles of road running before crossing the finish line at Williamsport High School.

I can only imagine the sense of accomplishment the runners must have!

We first became aware of the race shortly after purchasing our property in early November, 2014. In the years since, we have enjoyed race day more and more. It is especially nice that the Taylor’s Landing aid station at mile 38 of the race (known as “38 Special”) is right out front. Our normally quiet little street by the river suddenly becomes a buzz with activity. It’s so exciting to see the runners pass by! A few have even been our guests! We are always amazed how fast they are still running after 38 miles and strong they look.

If you or a family member are planning to participate in the race, consider making The River Bend Retreat your home base for the weekend.  Friends and family can enjoy all the comforts of home as they await the arrival of their favorite runner.  We’d also bet that runners will appreciate a hot bath or shower, a big homemade meal, and a comfy bed following their completion of the race!
